OUR STORY
Once upon a time, in the bustling urban landscapes and quiet rural corners of India, ideas for an ecological focus in building and settlements began. It was a transformative journey led by the MGsCc Foundation, to eke out narratives of hope in the realm of ecological sustainability.
At the heart of this story was the visionary Nisha Mathew Ghosh. Since 2004, Nisha along with a small team has been weaving the intent to build a sustainable and critical cross-disciplinary practice: So whether it was turning discarded fabric into an opportunity for those needing economic renewal or teaching the disadvantaged to weave stainless steel, the core was a commitment to and a stewardship of God's phenomenal creation. The Foundation soon embarked on a mission at Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) where renewal and rehabilitation were key to empowering women from vulnerable backgrounds. These women, once hidden in the shadows, now shone brightly, their hands weaving not just fabrics but also their futures.
Meanwhile, in the urban sprawl of Bangalore, a different challenge loomed. Mountains of textile waste, discarded and forgotten, threatened to overwhelm the city. With a pioneering spirit, and the hope of removing virgin textile waste’s disaster-potential with its toxic bleach-dyes reaching water sources, we began to climb and comb the available remnants into resources, setting a new Circular paradigm for its potential to be used in an urban waste management system for virgin textile waste (with a pilot for Koramangala, in the South Eastern part of Bangalore)
These stories, from KGF to Koramangala, were threads in a larger tapestry of the Foundation's vision. A vision where sustainable design serves both the planet and its people, enriching lives and preserving the environment.
As the pages turned, the Foundation's tale grew. From 2017 to 2021, our founder and a dedicated team worked tirelessly, without remuneration, laying the groundwork for a cleaner future. Early research projects like the DRAIN-LOVES LAKE and the YELAHANKA LAKE effluent treatment research were just the beginning. In 2021, a milestone was reached with a global exhibition, showcasing India's innovative sustainable solutions mapped for the first time to the world outside India.
This story, still being written, is a testament to dedication, innovation, and the power of collective action. It's a story of transforming challenges into opportunities, of weaving a sustainable future where every thread counts. And as we look ahead, the journey continues, with each step a stride towards a greener, more resilient world.

Nisha Mathew Ghosh
Founder-Trustee MGsCc Foundation India | Independent Curator | Independent Architect and Partner at Mathew and Ghosh Architects | Social Impact Evangelist for communities and cities| Author
Diverse areas of influence, impact and interest engage the liminal areas between architecture, art, ecology and social impact via advocacy in the work of Nisha Mathew Ghosh. Her work is ‘curatorial’ by nature as she comments critically to address equitability through projects at the threshold of ecologies and communities. From empowerment of communities to students’ programs, she is committed to transformational change and an accountable stewardship of the earth and its resources.
Nisha Mathew Ghosh's practice praxis occupies an experimental space often using repair, rehabilitation and renewal as the strategy to bridge ecology with community. Her recent projects are initiated from the ground-up using the existing found-material of the site as a tactic to occupy the material site fully and also in a manner as to leave that material site as it was when the material is returned back to it. In that sense her architecture attempts a light occupation, often referencing the 'plinth' or 'plateau' of inhabitation as the only ground that solidly remains as a first footprint and a last trace.
Using the palette available her work tends to segue into the curatorial as meanings of material-use and its disposition in composition are juxtaposed for the narration of the project - restoration of the ecology and agency to the community.
In this, her practice tries to shift the paradigm of needing a patron, to that of the Architect-Artist-Activist where empowerment and agency are restored in a sense to the individual practitioner.
